An Urban Revitalization
Art Alley is a community initiative headed up by ReThink Urban, whose main focus resides on reducing community crime through community engagement. Following the CPTED Principals (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), Art Alley started as a pilot project in the summer of 2014, and with much success and embrace from the community, continued till 2017.
The aim of Art Alley was to provide a beautiful new landscape to otherwise dark, unsavory areas within the downtown community. Public art has been shown to deter criminal activity, attracting a more positive experience to the area. By working together, we can build a more vibrant, safer community through the simplest of things which hold a tenfold host of benefits: colour, enhanced well-being, beauty, less crime, safer streets and hope - just to name a few.
I was recruited as the documentary photographer and videographer for 3 years. Art Alley was a delight to work on and contribute towards. Passionate as I am about our community and ways we can engage with each other, this was an amazing project to be a part of. It was fascinating to see creative minds of different disciplines and styles come together with one main goal in mind. I had the fortunate opportunity to work alongside some very talented artists, documenting the process as they took the streets from grey and monotone to vibrant, colour and life filled stories, and even painted a mini-mural myself.
